Permanent Account Number (PAN) is an alpha-numeric identification number issued by the Income Tax Department. All income and tax-related details of a person/ entity are linked against the PAN, and the same is shared across the country.

Who can apply for a PAN Card in India?
Any of the following people can apply for a PAN in India:
- Individuals
- Partnership Firm
- Public/ Private limited companies
- Trust
- Non-Government Organization/ Non-Profit Organization
- Cooperative Society
- HUF – Hindu Undivided Family
Why apply for a PAN Card in India?
PAN is mandatory under many circumstances, such as applying for Goods & Service Tax registration, it acts as an identity card, it may be required by banks when opening an account/ deposit, it will be required by the employer, etc.
Also, in certain cases, such as banks, when a person does not provide details of PAN, the tax deducted on the interest paid shall be deducted at a higher percentage.
How do you apply for a PAN Online Card in India?
PAN can be applied either online by visiting NSDL website or offline mode, Get application form from authorized PAN Centre or download the same from NSDL website. After filling up the application and attaching relevant proofs as requested and after paying the application fees, the application can be submitted. PAN will be dispatched to address specified by the applicant.
However, a latest facility to download e-PAN card has been introduced. The facility is available for all those who applied for PAN through online mode. One can visit onlineservice.nsdl.com for downloading the e-PAN card.

- Step – 1. Visit https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pantan/StatusTrack.html.
- Step – 2. Select ” PAN-New/Change Request” from drop-down menu in “Application Type” option.

How to check you PAN Card status online?
Usually, it takes 15-20 working days to issue PAN card (the latest improvement is that, the Income Tax Department has made a provision to get PAN card in 2 days. However, in case if a person wants to check the status of his PAN application, the same can be done through online. Upon applying for PAN card, the person/ entity will be issued an ‘Acknowledgement Number’.
The exact procedure is as follows:
STEP 1: Type “tin.tin.nsdl pan status” in your web browser.
STEP 2: Click on the first link [ Status Track search for PAN/TAN – NSDL ] as shown in the above screenshot. You will be taken to the following site.
STEP 3: Under ‘Application type’ select PAN New/ Change request. Enter the acknowledgement number obtained while applying for PAN. Enter the captcha code and click on Submit to view the PAN application status.
What if I forgot the acknowledgement number – PAN Card Status?
In case a person has forgotten the acknowledgement number, the status of the PAN application can still be checked using Name & Date of Birth/ Date of Incorporation. The steps for the same are as follows:
STEP 1: Type “tin.tin.nsdl pan status” in your web browser.
STEP 2: Click on the second link [ Track Your PAN/TAN Application Status NSDL ] as shown in the screenshot. You will be taken to the following site.
STEP 3: Under ‘Application type’ select PAN New/ Change request. Enter the Name & Date of Birth/ Date of Incorporation as provided while applying for PAN. Click on Submit to view the PAN application status.
Just like the SMS service, PAN applicants can check the status of their PAN application through a simple telephone call made to the Tax Information Network call centre. According to the official website of the Income Tax Department, applicants can contact 020-27218080 and provide their 15-digit acknowledgement number.
Alternative methods to check PAN Card Application Status Online?
YES. There are two more Alternative methods to check the PAN Card Application Status. one can use the PAN application online.
Steps to Track PAN Delivery Status Online through the NSDL Portal. Applicants who have filled their PAN application through the TIN-NSDL portal can track the delivery status of PAN card application (both new as well as reprint/update) online through the TIN-NSDL portal.
Once the application and payment is accepted, the applicant is required to send the supporting documents through courier/post to NSDL/UTITSL. Only after the receipt of the documents, PAN application would be processed by NSDL/UTITSL.
Method I – Check PAN Card Status Online at UTIITSL
The PAN card status can be checked in the website of UTIITSL. Search for “UTIITSL PAN status” in your web browser.
If you click on the above link [ UTIITSL :: Track your PAN Application ], it will take you to the following site where one needs to enter the ‘acknowledgement number’ and the Date of Birth/ Date of Incorporation to know the status of the PAN application.
Method II – Check Pan Card Status Online at incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
By following the below mentioned steps, one can check the status of PAN application at incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. However, for using this method, the person should have a valid ‘Aadhaar Number’, which should have also been provided in the application while applying for PAN.
Aadhaar would be considered as a supporting document. There is no need to send the PAN application form and supporting documents to NSDL e-Gov. However, original documents as per Rule 114(4) of Income Tax Rules, 1962
STEP 1: To Check Pan Card Status Online at incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in, Visit ‘https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/’
STEP 2: At incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in, Under the tab ‘Quick Links’ on the left-hand side of the page, you will find an option called “Instant PAN through Aadhaar”. Click on the same and you will be directed to a new page as follows:
STEP 3: Click on “Check Status/ Download PAN” option on the give page. You will be taken to a new page where the details of Aadhaar number should be given, along with the captcha code.
STEP 4: Enter the OTP received in the relevant space provided and proceed to check the PAN application status.
