Indian women entrepreneurs have emerged as important players in the economic development of the nation through setting up businesses, creating job opportunities, driving innovation, and contributing to the local as well as the national economy. Women entrepreneurs are setting up different kinds of businesses, including family-owned firms, technology startups, manufacturing firms, and professional service organisations. Entrepreneurship enables women to become economically independent and to build skills such as leadership and income generation.

The Government of India has taken several initiatives to help women entrepreneurs with financial support, training, skill development, and market access. In addition, Udyam Registration helps eligible women-owned businesses register as MSMEs and avail themselves of government benefits.

Even so, women entrepreneurs may face problems such as funding gaps, network building, visibility, and compliance. Knowing how to register and what funding and government support is available can go a long way in overcoming these difficulties. With proper guidance and support, women entrepreneurs can build up their business activities, explore growth opportunities, and make a significant contribution to entrepreneurship in India.

If your business is in Chennai or elsewhere in Tamil Nadu, you can register on the same national portal and also use state schemes. Start with our Udyam registration in Chennai service, or read on to see what you gain.

What Is Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration is an online registration scheme formulated by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India, that serves to officially identify qualifying micro, small and medium enterprises. It gives firms a unique identification number and an electronic registration certificate, enabling them to take advantage of government schemes and opportunities for expansion.

The scheme is online, paperless and based on self-declaration. It comes at no cost and does not need to be renewed on a regular basis. Eligible entities can register through the official Udyam portal if they satisfy all the necessary criteria.

MSME classification depends on the enterprise’s investment in plant, machinery or equipment and its annual turnover, as per prevailing government guidelines. The classification below has been applied since 1 April 2025, and both criteria must fit within the same category. Exports are excluded from turnover.

Category Investment in Plant, Machinery or Equipment Annual Turnover
Micro Up to ₹2.5 crore Up to ₹10 crore
Small Up to ₹25 crore Up to ₹100 crore
Medium Up to ₹125 crore Up to ₹500 crore

Investment and turnover are pulled from your income tax return and GST data, so keep both filed and consistent. Udyam Registration could help firms to get loans from financial institutions without collateral, take advantage of government procurement schemes, get protection against delays in payments for qualifying micro and small firms, and benefit from other MSME schemes and programmes.

Udyam Registration for Women Entrepreneurs

Udyam Registration is a Government initiative that provides formal registration to eligible Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). It helps women entrepreneurs to register their businesses formally and to explore various government-supported options for financial support, business growth, and market expansion.

1. Eligibility

  • Women entrepreneurs owning eligible manufacturing or service businesses are eligible for Udyam Registration. Retail and wholesale traders can also register, though for priority sector lending purposes only.
  • They need to fulfil the prescribed investment and turnover norms for MSMEs. A sole proprietorship, partnership, HUF, LLP, company, cooperative society or trust can get registration under certain conditions.
  • For women-specific benefits, schemes usually look for real ownership by women, for example, a woman proprietor, or women holding at least 51% of a partnership, LLP or company. Check the exact rule for each scheme.

2. Online Registration

  • The registration is a free-of-cost, paperless, self-declaration process through the official Udyam Registration website.
  • Applicants need the Aadhaar number of the proprietor, managing partner, or authorised signatory, and the PAN of the business. PAN has been mandatory since 1 April 2021, and a GSTIN is required where GST registration applies.
  • Micro businesses with no PAN or GST, such as many home-based businesses, can register on the Udyam Assist Platform to access priority sector lending benefits.

3. Financial Assistance

  • Women-owned MSMEs registered with Udyam are eligible for various programmes, such as business loans, credit guarantee schemes, and other financial assistance schemes from the government.
  • This depends on the eligibility criteria of the scheme concerned and the assessment of the lender.

4. Government Schemes

Women entrepreneurs may use various entrepreneurship development schemes, skill training, subsidies, marketing assistance, and other government schemes for women. See the table of schemes below.

5. Tender Incentives

Eligible women-owned enterprises may avail themselves of certain government procurement schemes, such as tender exemptions and other incentives for women-owned enterprises.

6. Business Growth

The process of Udyam Registration increases the formal recognition of the business and helps in gaining the confidence of banks, customers, suppliers, and other business partners.

It is noteworthy that Udyam registration is free and there is no need for renewal. Beware of websites that charge a government fee. Our MSME registration service charges only for assistance, and the government portal itself is free.

Benefits of Udyam Registration for Women Entrepreneurs

Udyam registration allows eligible firms to get formal recognition and also gives them the opportunity to benefit from various government schemes, grants, and business development opportunities. The following are some of the benefits that Udyam registration may provide to women entrepreneurs.

1. Benefit from Various Government Schemes and Incentives

  • Women entrepreneurs can access different government schemes and incentives intended to promote entrepreneurship, self-employment, and business growth.
  • This may include financial assistance, subsidies, training programmes, and entrepreneurial development services, among others.

2. Ease of Getting Bank Loans

  • Udyam Registration can help women entrepreneurs establish their businesses as MSMEs while applying for bank loans.
  • This could improve the chances of accessing MSME-oriented loan products and credit-based schemes. Udyam and GST data can also support customised credit cards for micro enterprises, with a ₹5 lakh limit.
  • However, loan approval depends on the lender’s assessment of repayment capacity, creditworthiness, and other legal matters.

3. Collateral-Free Lending Facilities

  • Women-owned businesses that qualify for the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) are eligible for the lending facilities available there.
  • These facilities provide credit guarantees to eligible lenders for loans without requiring conventional collateral or third-party guarantees, as per the scheme guidelines. The guarantee covers loans up to ₹10 crore per borrower for micro and small enterprises, and women-owned units get higher cover than other borrowers on smaller loans, which can go up to 90%. It does not cover medium enterprises, and loans are given only through banks and other lenders that take part in the scheme.
  • However, Udyam Registration helps in identifying MSMEs formally, and it does not guarantee loan approval.

4. Preference in Government Procurement

  • Registered MSMEs become eligible for various procurement benefits under different government purchase policies.
  • These include exemption from earnest money deposits and other tender-related benefits, where applicable. Central government buyers have a target to buy 25% of their requirements from micro and small enterprises, with a sub-target for women-owned units.
  • Women-owned MSMEs can also sell through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), which runs a Womaniya initiative for women entrepreneurs and self-help groups.

5. Protection from Delayed Payment by Statute

  • Micro and small enterprises registered under the MSMED Act are protected against delayed payment for eligible goods and services.
  • Buyers must pay within the agreed time, and the maximum statutory period is 45 days where there is a written agreement, or 15 days where there is none. Interest on delays is charged at three times the bank rate, compounded monthly. Eligible enterprises can approach the Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council to recover such amounts and file the case on the Samadhaan portal.
  • A tax rule backs this up. Buyers who pay a micro or small supplier beyond 45 days cannot claim the expense as a deduction until they pay (Section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act), and companies must report such dues in MSME Form 1 every half-year. This gives larger buyers a strong reason to pay women-owned MSMEs on time. It also means that if you are a buyer from other MSMEs, you should pay them within 45 days.

6. Improvement of Business Credibility

  • Udyam Registration helps in the official identification of the eligible business.
  • This can prove helpful for women entrepreneurs during transactions with suppliers, clients, banks, and other businesses.

7. Advantages from Priority Sector Lending

  • As per RBI guidelines, banks must lend a share of their credit to priority sectors, which includes eligible MSMEs.
  • Udyam Registration can help a woman-owned firm get the benefit of such loans.

8. Help with Business Development and Training

  • Entrepreneurs can benefit from various training and capacity-building programmes that include entrepreneurship skill development and training.
  • There is a specific programme for women artisans engaged in the coir industry, called Mahila Coir Yojana, which helps improve their skills and provides equipment support.

9. Marketing and Market Expansion

  • There are government programmes under which women-owned MSMEs are given assistance to participate in trade fairs, exhibitions and other events.
  • These help entrepreneurs showcase their products, interact with buyers and market their products to explore new markets.

10. Free and Paperless Registration

  • Registration of the business under Udyam is paperless, online and on a self-declaration basis.
  • It is a free process and does not require any renewal.
  • It provides a permanent registration number and an e-certificate to the enterprise owner.

11. Other Advantages

  • Trademark fee concession: Udyam-registered MSMEs pay the lower government fee of ₹4,500 per class instead of ₹9,000 when e-filing a trademark. See trademark registration.
  • Invoice discounting: MSMEs can sell their invoices on the TReDS platforms to get paid early.
  • Quality certification: the ZED certification scheme offers a subsidy on certification costs, and ZED-certified units get higher guarantee cover.

Note: Not all women entrepreneurs will be eligible for all the benefits mentioned above. This depends on many factors, including the category of the MSME, ownership, business activity and the conditions of the specific scheme.

Udyam Registration and Women Entrepreneur Support in Chennai and Tamil Nadu

The registration is the same across India, but Tamil Nadu adds its own support. Your Udyam number will carry the state code TN, and the District Industries Centre in your district is the local office for state schemes. Our pages on Udyam registration in Chennai and Udyam registration in Tamil Nadu explain the local process.

  • TWEES: the Tamil Nadu Women Entrepreneurs Empowerment Scheme offers loans with a capital subsidy for women-led enterprises.
  • NEEDS: the New Entrepreneur-cum-Enterprise Development Scheme offers a subsidy and a term loan through the Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation (TIIC) in Chennai, for first-generation entrepreneurs, women included.
  • UYEGP: a state scheme for micro enterprises, with a subsidy on project cost.
  • Training: the Entrepreneurship Development and Innovation Institute, Tamil Nadu (EDII-TN) in Chennai runs entrepreneurship training programmes.
  • Portal: apply and track state schemes on the Tamil Nadu MSME portal.

Eligibility, subsidy caps and age limits differ by scheme and change from time to time. Check the latest terms with the District Industries Centre or TIIC before you apply.

Tamil Nadu has a strong base of women-led enterprises in garments, handloom and silk, coir, food processing and home-based production in places such as Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Kancheepuram, Pollachi and Madurai. Once registered, many of them also need GST registration, FSSAI registration for food businesses and trademark registration. Founders choosing a structure can see sole proprietorship in Chennai, partnership firm registration, LLP registration and private limited company registration in Chennai.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Paying for a website for what is a free government registration.
  • Registering with personal PAN when the business is a company or LLP, which needs the entity PAN.
  • Choosing the wrong NIC code, which can affect scheme eligibility.
  • Not updating the registration after a change of address, ownership or activity.
  • Not filing income tax returns and GST returns, which can show wrong turnover and classification.
  • Assuming registration guarantees a loan, subsidy or tender.
  • Showing a woman as the owner on paper when she does not actually own or run the business. Schemes verify ownership, and a false claim can lead to rejection or recovery.
  • Forgetting that buyers need your Udyam certificate to treat you as a micro or small supplier for the 45-day payment rule.

Conclusion

Udyam Registration is a crucial step towards the empowerment of women entrepreneurs and their inclusion in the MSME segment of the Indian economy. It gives eligible women-led companies recognition from the government, along with access to benefits such as financial assistance, collateral-free loan schemes, procurement opportunities and business development services. The registration can help women entrepreneurs run, manage and expand their businesses more efficiently. But the key lies in understanding their eligibility criteria and the conditions of each particular scheme.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Udyam Registration for women entrepreneurs?

Udyam Registration is a free online government registration that classifies eligible enterprises into Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). There is no separate registration for women. Women entrepreneurs can use it to explore eligible government schemes, get institutional funding, improve the reputation of the business, and explore opportunities for growth and expansion.

2. Do women entrepreneurs qualify for loans under the Udyam Registration scheme?

Yes, Udyam-registered women entrepreneurs can avail themselves of loans and credit guarantee schemes meant for MSMEs. These facilities help with expansion, purchase of equipment, and working capital. However, whether a loan is granted depends on the lender’s decision as well as creditworthiness and scheme eligibility.

3. Do women entrepreneurs receive subsidies through Udyam Registration?

Through Udyam Registration, women entrepreneurs can be eligible for government schemes that provide financial aid, subsidies, business development services, and training. Nevertheless, registration does not guarantee such help. Whether an entrepreneur qualifies depends on the nature of the business and the eligibility requirements.

4. Are women entrepreneurs eligible for government tender benefits?

Yes, eligible women-owned MSMEs are eligible for government tender benefits as per government procurement rules. Eligibility depends on the tender rules and the scheme criteria. Udyam Registration helps prove MSME status, but it does not secure every procurement benefit.

5. Is Udyam registration necessary for women entrepreneurs?

Udyam registration is usually optional, but it is beneficial for women entrepreneurs who want the benefits of MSME-related schemes, institutional funding, and procurement. The process is free, paperless, and requires self-declaration through the official government website.

6. What are the current MSME limits?

From 1 April 2025, micro enterprises can have investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore, small up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore, and medium up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore.

7. What documents are needed for Udyam registration?

You need the Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner or authorised signatory, the PAN of the business, and the GSTIN where applicable, plus your bank details. No documents are uploaded.

8. Can a home-based woman entrepreneur do so without GST registration?

Informal micro enterprises without PAN or GST can register on the Udyam Assist Platform to access priority sector lending. If you have a PAN and are required to have a GSTIN, use the regular Udyam portal.

9. Does Udyam registration expire?

No. It is permanent and has no renewal fee. You should update your details when anything changes, and keep your tax returns filed since your classification is based on them.

10. How long do buyers have to pay a woman-owned micro or small enterprise?

Up to 45 days where there is a written agreement, or 15 days where there is none. Delayed payments attract interest at three times the bank rate, and you can approach the MSME Facilitation Council.

11. Are there Tamil Nadu schemes for women entrepreneurs?

Yes. Tamil Nadu runs schemes such as TWEES and NEEDS, and TIIC and District Industries Centres handle applications. Terms change, so check the latest details on the Tamil Nadu MSME portal.

12. Do I get a Udyam number with a state code?

Yes. The Udyam Registration Number carries the state code, so a Tamil Nadu enterprise’s number begins with UDYAM-TN.
