Udyam Registration for Exporters: Benefits, Eligibility & Documents

7 Mins read
Legally Reviewed

Udyam Registration can be useful for eligible exporters that qualify as micro, small or medium enterprises. It provides a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an online certificate, while the registration process is free and paperless. For Udyam classification, export turnover is not included in the turnover calculation, which can be particularly relevant for export-oriented MSMEs.

For companies and LLPs, the official Udyam portal requires PAN, GSTIN where applicable, and Aadhaar details of the authorised signatory during registration. The portal states that documents do not need to be uploaded because relevant information is integrated with government databases.

Exporting from India involves more than finding an overseas buyer and arranging shipment. Depending on the business, an exporter may also need an Importer Exporter Code (IEC), GST and customs-related compliance, banking arrangements, and product-specific permissions. If the enterprise qualifies as a micro, small or medium enterprise, Udyam Registration adds another useful layer of formal recognition.

Udyam Registration does not itself authorise a business to export. Instead, it establishes the enterprise as an MSME and can become relevant when the business applies for schemes, credit support, procurement benefits or other programmes that require proof of MSME status. Some export-support programmes specifically require a valid Udyam Registration linked with the IEC.

For exporters, Udyam should therefore be treated as part of the wider compliance file, not as a substitute for the IEC or other export registrations.

Quick Summary

Udyam Registration can be useful for exporters that qualify as Micro, Small or Medium Enterprises, helping them establish MSME status and access applicable government benefits and support schemes.

  • Export businesses that qualify as Micro, Small or Medium Enterprises can apply for Udyam Registration.
  • Udyam Registration provides an official MSME registration certificate and Udyam Registration Number.
  • Eligible exporters may access applicable MSME schemes, government incentives, credit support and other benefits, subject to the relevant scheme conditions.
  • Keep required details such as Aadhaar, PAN, GSTIN where applicable, business and bank information ready for registration.
  • Ensure the information provided in Udyam Registration is accurate and updated, particularly when business or financial details change.

What Exactly Is Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration is the official mechanism through which a qualifying enterprise is recognised as a micro, small or medium enterprise. The Ministry of MSME states that the process is online, free and based on self-declaration. After registration, the enterprise receives a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an online certificate with a dynamic QR code. There is no renewal requirement.

From 1 April 2025, a micro enterprise is one with investment in plant and machinery or equipment not exceeding ₹2.5 crore and turnover not exceeding ₹10 crore. For a small enterprise, the limits are ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore; for a medium enterprise, ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore.

Exports of goods and services are excluded when turnover is calculated for classification. An exporter with ₹8 crore of domestic sales and ₹50 crore of exports is measured against the turnover ceiling on the ₹8 crore only. The investment test still applies in full.

Importance of Udyam Registration for Exporters

First, it provides a formal MSME status. It may become useful in case the exporter approaches financial institutions for schemes applicable to the MSMEs. It could also be used by the exporter when applying for government schemes that require MSME status as a requirement.

Secondly, it allows access to certain export-linked facilities. For instance, there is now an ongoing scheme of credit assistance for exporters via e-commerce that requires a valid registration under the Udyam system linked to IEC, among other requirements.

Udyam registration could also be important in case of late payment provisions and MSME-related procurement/financing schemes provided that other requirements are fulfilled.

Who Can Register?

  • Proprietorships, partnership firms, companies, LLPs, cooperatives, societies and trusts carrying on eligible economic activity may register if they satisfy the MSME conditions.
  • An exporter can register whether its principal activity is manufacturing or services, subject to the applicable framework.
  • Businesses holding an earlier Udyog Aadhaar or UAM registration are required to migrate to Udyam.
  • An enterprise should not create multiple Udyam registrations for the same enterprise merely to separate activities; multiple activities can be included in one registration.
  • If you export goods you buy rather than make, you will usually be classed as a trader. Registration is allowed, but MSME-ministry benefits are limited to priority sector lending. Check each export scheme’s own eligibility rules before assuming you qualify.

Documents and Information Required

The benefit of Udyam Registration is that it is not an exercise in uploading documents. As per the official portal, it is not mandatory to upload documents, certificates, or proof. Documents are verified by Aadhaar-based authentication.

  • Aadhaar number of the proprietor, managing partner or authorised person, as per the nature of the organisation.
  • PAN number of the business or organisation.
  • GSTIN of the organisation, when applicable.
  • Mobile number and email ID for OTP purposes.
  • Bank account number and IFSC code as per registration procedure.
  • Address and other details of the enterprise, plant/unit along with the commencement date.
  • NIC codes of the activities conducted by the exporter.

An authorised signatory of a company or LLP provides the required Aadhaar details along with PAN number and GSTIN. Also, exporters need to ensure that their IEC information matches that of Udyam and PAN numbers, especially if a scheme needs linkages between IEC and Udyam. For the full checklist across entity types, see documents required for Udyam registration.

Udyam Registration vs IEC: Do Exporters Need Both?

Udyam Registration Importer Exporter Code (IEC)
Recognises an enterprise as an MSME Identifies the business for import/export activity
Issued through the Ministry of MSME portal Issued through DGFT
Free on the official Udyam portal Separate DGFT process
Supports eligibility for eligible MSME schemes Core export/import identification requirement, subject to exceptions
Does not authorise export Does not establish MSME status

For who needs an IEC and what it covers, see our guide to the DGFT IEC code.

Udyam Registration Process – Step by Step

Step 1 – Check eligibility status by comparing the investments/turnover figures with the latest MSME limits.

Step 2 – Verify your Aadhaar details on the official Udyam portal.

Step 3 – Verify your PAN & GST and ensure that the legal name and tax details match.

Step 4 – Enter the details of your business, which include address, date of establishment, bank account details, plant/unit details and NIC activity codes.

Step 5 – Download the Udyam certificate. Remember the Udyam number and certificate. Use the same verified information while registering for schemes.

The Benefits that Exporters Can Hope to Obtain

  • Recognition of MSME – This certificate helps in proving the classification of MSMEs.
  • Eligibility criteria – The Udyam certificate can work as an eligibility criterion when MSME registration is required.
  • Financing assistance – There might be certain schemes under which Udyam can help in making exporters eligible.
  • Protection against delayed payment – Statutory delayed-payment protection under the MSMED Act, available to micro and small manufacturers and service providers against buyers in India (not to traders, and not clearly against overseas buyers).
  • Digital verification – The certificate includes a QR code for digital verification.
  • No renewal fee – The registration does not have any annual renewal fees.

Fees and Cost

Item Position Important point
Udyam Registration ₹0 government fee The official portal states that registration is free.
Udyam certificate No annual renewal fee There is no annual renewal requirement.
IEC Separate DGFT process Udyam does not replace IEC.
Professional assistance Optional No private agent is required for official registration.

Use only the official Udyam portal. The Ministry specifically warns applicants about private websites charging for a process the Government provides free of cost.

Pro Tips for Exporters

  • Pro Tip 1 – Do not treat Udyam as an export licence. Keep Udyam, IEC, GST and customs compliance as separate items in the exporter’s checklist. Our guide to IEC and GST registration for exporters covers the GST and LUT side.
  • Pro Tip 2 – Select NIC codes carefully. The registration should reflect the enterprise’s real activities, especially when the certificate will be used for a scheme.
  • Pro Tip 3 – Before applying for a subsidy, credit facility or reimbursement, read that scheme’s eligibility conditions. Udyam registration alone does not guarantee approval.

A Scenario Worth Knowing About

A small apparel manufacturer begins selling products to buyers in the UAE. The founders already have an IEC but have never registered as an MSME.

While exploring an export-credit programme, they discover that the programme requires a valid Udyam Registration linked to the IEC. They complete Udyam registration, verify the enterprise details and update the relevant DGFT information.

The lesson is that export and MSME compliance work alongside each other. Udyam may support eligibility where a scheme requires it, but the exporter must still satisfy that programme’s financial, export and documentary conditions.

A Few Things Worth Doing Differently

  • Complete Udyam registration early instead of waiting until a bank or government scheme asks for it.
  • Keep Udyam, IEC, PAN and GST details consistent.
  • Review the enterprise classification when investment or turnover changes materially. See our guide to MSME compliance in India for post-registration updates.
  • Check scheme-specific rules before describing Udyam as an automatic export benefit.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is Udyam Registration compulsory for exporters?

Udyam is not a universal export licence and is not required merely because a business exports. It becomes important where the exporter wants MSME recognition or applies for a scheme that specifically requires Udyam registration.

2. Does Udyam Registration replace IEC?

No. IEC identifies the business for import/export activity, while Udyam establishes MSME registration. They serve different purposes and should be maintained separately.

3. Is Udyam Registration free for exporters?

Yes. The official Udyam portal states that registration is free of cost. Applicants should be cautious of private websites charging a government registration fee.

4. Which documents will be uploaded for Udyam Registration?

According to the official portal, no documents, certificates, or proofs have to be uploaded for the purpose of the process. This procedure is carried out through Aadhaar verification and fetching PAN and GST-related information wherever applicable. Information about the enterprise is needed.

5. Does export turnover count toward the MSME limit?

No. Exports of goods and services are excluded from turnover for classification. Only domestic turnover is measured against the ceiling. Your investment in plant and machinery or equipment is still tested separately.

6. Can Udyam help an exporter get government benefits?

Yes, Udyam Registration can help exporters avail government benefits if the scheme requires MSME registration. Each scheme comes with its own terms and requirements.
