Central FSSAI License - Overview
The Food Standards and Safety Authority of India (FSSAI) is the regulatory body overseeing food security in India. To prevent adulteration in food products, all FBOs must get a 14-digit FSSAI registration/license number based on their business activity and turnover, which they must then display on food packaging. All of India’s major FBOs have Central Licenses issued by the FSSAI. It is the primary prerequisite for food enterprises that manufacture, store, distribute, transport or sell food items.
Importance of FSSAI Central License:
It is mandatory by the FSSAI department for all large food business operators to obtain a Central FSSAI license to run their business legally in India. There are various reasons for FSSAI obtaining a Central License, which are as follows:
-
FSSAI monitors the food license of FBOs on a random basis and takes strict actions over those businesses whose licenses have expired or food businesses that don’t have an FSSAI license.
-
There is a considerable level of consumer trust in the safety and quality of food, so it has been mandatory to continue that trust of the public. So, licensing is an essential factor in keeping that trust.
-
To maintain consumers’ trust, FBOs must print a 14-digit FSSAI License number on their food packages.
-
Central License promotes trade without compromising consumer protection and a larger share.
-
Central FSSAI License assures that the food products undergo quality checks by reducing adulteration and selling sub-standard products.

It is up to the FBOs whether they want to continue. But if they intend to continue their business, they require its renewal.
The food license renewal must be applied for from either Form A or Form B before 30 days of the expiry of the existing registration. Any FSAI License Renewal application filed beyond the expiry date will be charged a late fee of Rs—100 for each delayed day.
In the case of the expiry of the food license, the food business operator should mandatorily terminate all the business activities at the premises.
FSSAI Timeline:
