FSSAI License Renewal Online
If you are running a food business in India, then you must be aware of the FSSAI license, which is essential for all food-related businesses to operate legally in the country. Renewal of this license is a statutory requirement under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. FSSAI licenses are valid for 1 to 5 years and must be renewed at least 30 days before their expiry. Renewing the license ensures regulatory compliance with the law, facilitates uninterrupted business operations, and enhances consumer confidence in the brand. Businesses that fail to renew their licenses on time may face legal penalties, including a daily late fee of ₹100, business shutdown, and ineligibility for government schemes. Both online and offline modes are available for renewal, requiring the applicant to submit the renewal application along with documents and payment of the applicable fee.
What Is the FSSAI License?
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) License is a mandatory certification that ensures food businesses comply with the required food safety standards. The FSSAI license essentially serves as your “passport” to legally operate a food business in India.
Types of FSSAI Licenses
FSSAI licenses are categorized based on the scale and nature of the food business:
- Basic Registration: For small-scale FBOs with an annual turnover of up to ₹12 lakhs.
- State License: For medium-scale FBOs with an annual turnover between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crores.
- Central License: For large-scale FBOs with an annual turnover exceeding ₹20 crores or those involved in import/export, operating in multiple states.
Importance of FSSAI License
FSSAI License is essential due to:
- Regulatory Compliance: An FSSAI license is mandatory for all food businesses in India. Operating a business without a valid license is a violation of the law and can result in penalties, including the closure of business operations.
- Food Safety Guarantee: When a food business obtains an FSSAI license, it agrees to the strict safety and hygiene protocols at every stage of food production. The license helps in ensuring that the business is committed to high safety standards and minimizes the risk of contamination and adulteration.
- Building Consumer Trust: Displaying an FSSAI license on your premises or food packaging acts as a visible assurance to the consumers and enhances the credibility of your brand. The permit serves as a competitive edge, as consumers are more inclined to choose products from a certified brand.
- Improve Operational Standards: An FSSAI license encourages businesses to monitor and improve their operational practices continually. From regular internal audits to periodic inspections conducted by regulatory authorities, a well-built operational system drives quality enhancements within operations.
Importance of FSSAI License Renewal
Renewing your FSSAI license is not just a formality; it is a legal requirement. A valid FSSAI license ensures:
- Renewing your FSSAI license on time allows you to run your food business without facing any legal problems.
- An FSSAI license is a statutory requirement under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Failure to renew it may result in the suspension or cancellation of your registration.
- Failure to renew the license on time can result in a late fee of ₹100 per day. Continuous delay can lead to business closure.
- With a valid and updated license, it becomes easier to deal with food safety checks and audits by the authorities.
- A renewed license proves that your business adheres to proper hygiene and food safety standards set by the government.
- A valid FSSAI license is sometimes required to participate in government procurement processes or institutional supply tenders.
Legal Provisions Governing FSSAI License Renewal
The FSS (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, particularly Regulation 2.1.7, govern the renewal of food business licenses and registrations:
1. Validity of License (Regulation 2.1.7(1))
A food license is valid for 1 to 5 years, as chosen by the Food Business Operator (FBO) at the time of application. The license remains valid as long as the applicable fee is paid and the FBO complies with all the conditions outlined in the license.
2. Renewal (Regulation 2.1.7(2))
The application for renewal of the license must be filed at least 180 days before the license expiry date. If you submit a renewal application after 30 days before the expiry date, a late fee of ₹100 per day is imposed
If the applicant files an application for renewal of the FSSAI
The application must be filed using the Form A for registration or the Form B for a license.
3. Expiry without Renewal (Regulation 2.1.7(5))
If a Food Business Operator (FBO) does not apply for renewal within 120-90 days from the expiry date, the license will automatically expire on the expiry date.
NOTE: The expiry date is the last date printed on your FSSAI license or registration certificate, i.e., the date until which your license remains legally valid.
Once the license expires, the food business must immediately stop all operations at the premises. The FBO is not allowed to sell, manufacture, store, or distribute any food until a new license is obtained.

- Immediate Expiry of License: According to Regulation 2.1.7(4) of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, if a renewal application is not submitted at least 30 days before the license's expiry date, the license is considered expired. - Cessation of Business Activities: Operating a food business without a valid FSSAI license is illegal in India. Upon expiry of the license, the FBO must cease all food-related operations until the license is renewed.
- Penalties and Imprisonment: Under Section 63 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, any person or FBO required to obtain a license, who manufactures, sells, stores, distributes, or imports any food article without a license, is punishable with imprisonment for a term that may extend to six months and a fine that may extend to ₹ 5 lakhs.
- Closure or Seizure of Business Premises: Food Safety Officers have the authority to inspect and, if necessary, seal premises, confiscate food stocks, or issue stop-business orders if a business is found operating without a valid license.
- Ineligibility for Government Schemes: Non-compliance with FSSAI regulations, including failure to renew the license, may render an FBO ineligible for various government schemes.
