The FSS (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, particularly Regulation 2.1.7, govern the renewal of food business licenses and registrations:
1. Validity of License (Regulation 2.1.7(1))
A food license is valid for 1 to 5 years, as chosen by the Food Business Operator (FBO) at the time of application. The license remains valid as long as the applicable fee is paid and the FBO complies with all the conditions outlined in the license.
2. Renewal (Regulation 2.1.7(2))
The application for renewal of the license must be filed at least 180 days before the license expiry date. If you submit a renewal application after 30 days before the expiry date, a late fee of ₹100 per day is imposed
If the applicant files an application for renewal of the FSSAI
The application must be filed using the Form A for registration or the Form B for a license.
3. Expiry without Renewal (Regulation 2.1.7(5))
If a Food Business Operator (FBO) does not apply for renewal within 120-90 days from the expiry date, the license will automatically expire on the expiry date.
NOTE: The expiry date is the last date printed on your FSSAI license or registration certificate, i.e., the date until which your license remains legally valid.
Once the license expires, the food business must immediately stop all operations at the premises. The FBO is not allowed to sell, manufacture, store, or distribute any food until a new license is obtained.

Online Process of FSSAI License Renewal in India
To renew the FSSAI license, the applicants need to follow the steps:
Visit the Portal
Visit the FoSCoS Portal at https://foscos.fssai.gov.in
Log in to the Account
- Log in to your account by entering your username and password used at the time of original license registration.
- If you have forgotten the login details, go to the ‘Forgot Password’ option and renew your license.
Click on the Renew Registration
- Renewal of the License is only available if the license is within 120 days of expiry.
- After logging in, go to the Dashboard and select 'Renew License/Registration'from the left menu.
- Select 'Apply for Renewal of License/Registration'
- Click on the Proceed button that you wish to renew.
Fill in the Renewal Application Form (Form A or B)
- After clicking on the Proceed button, you will be directed to Form A or Form B.
- The form will be pre-filled with details from your existing license.
- Renew all the details carefully, update any changes (if required).
- Attach updated and required documents in PDF or JPG format (as required).
Submit the Form
- Upload the documents in the specified format (generally PDF under 2 MB each).
- Submit the completed form after a final review.
Pay the Renewal Fee Online

Track Application Status
- After submitting your application, a reference number of 17 digit will be generated.
- You can use this ID to track the status of your application under 'Track Application'on the FoSCoS portal.
Inspection by Licensing Authority (If required)
- As per Regulation 2.1.7(6), if you hold a valid certificate from an accredited food safety auditor, inspection may be waived.
- If the Designated Officer orders an inspection, then the officer is obligated to record the reasons in writing for the inspection.
Receive the Renewed License
- Once the application is verified and approved, the renewed license or registration certificate will be issued. The renewed license will be provided within 60 days of the application.
- The renewed license must be printed and displayed in a visible location on the food business premises.
Consequences of Non-Renewal of FSSAI Registration
Failing to renew your FSSAI license or registration on time can lead to serious consequences such as:
- Immediate Expiry of License: According to Regulation 2.1.7(4) of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, if a renewal application is not submitted at least 30 days before the license's expiry date, the license is considered expired. FBOs are permitted to apply for renewal within 180 days after the expiry, subject to a late fee of ₹100 each day till default occurs.
- Cessation of Business Activities: Operating a food business without a valid FSSAI license is illegal in India. Upon expiry of the license, the FBO must cease all food-related operations until the license is renewed.
- Penalties and Imprisonment: Under Section 63 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, any person or FBO required to obtain a license, who manufactures, sells, stores, distributes, or imports any food article without a license, is punishable with imprisonment for a term that may extend to six months and a fine that may extend to ₹ 5 lakhs.
- Closure or Seizure of Business Premises: Food Safety Officers have the authority to inspect and, if necessary, seal premises, confiscate food stocks, or issue stop-business orders if a business is found operating without a valid license.
- Ineligibility for Government Schemes: Non-compliance with FSSAI regulations, including failure to renew the license, may render an FBO ineligible for various government schemes. For instance, participation in initiatives like the PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme or other MSME-related programs may require a valid FSSAI license.
